What Seraphim Falls Is About
Just after the Civil War, a man flees a party hunting him through snow-covered mountains. The reason his pursuer wants him is withheld for a long time. The film gives its first half almost entirely to the chase: dressing wounds, making fire, cold. When the terrain turns to desert in the second half the narrative leaves realism for something symbolic, and that abrupt shift is the most argued thing about it. Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan lead. It is the director's first feature. Who it's for: those who like sparse, survival-driven westerns. Who it's not for: viewers wanting one consistent tone; the film turns into another film by the end.
