Seven and a Half

Seven separate stories set in the apartment blocks of New Belgrade, arranged by the seven deadly sins. Pride, sloth, envy, wrath, greed, lust and gluttony are all big words, but the people we meet are not big at all. A fight with the neighbour, a debt not paid, something stolen, a promise not kept. Miroslav Momčilović's film shrinks the sins rather than enlarging them: in the Serbia of 2006, with people dealing with far heavier things, it gets hard to take the list seriously. The telling punishes nobody and teaches nothing; it gathers everyday life in the blocks in a comic register. The cast includes Branislav Trifunović, Marija Karan and Nenad Jezdić, familiar Serbian actors of the period.
