Seymour Bernstein was known as a concert pianist and then, at fifty, left the stage and gave himself to teaching. Ethan Hawke’s first documentary takes place in this man’s apartment, in his teaching room and at his piano; it is not the story of a great career but a portrait of the relationship a person builds with their own work. Talking with his students, Bernstein goes past technique and asks how an artist is to come to terms with their own life, and the film leaves those conversations as they are. Hawke appears both as the director and as the person sitting across from him. It screened at the Telluride Film Festival in 2014 and IFC Films released it on 13 March 2015. The record gives the year as 2015, while the film was finished in 2014.
