What Shadow Magic Is About
The year is 1902 and the place is Beijing. Liu Jinglun is a portrait photographer. He is drawn to new technology. An Englishman arrives in the city. His name is Wallace. He has brought a projector and a camera. He has short films by the Lumière brothers as well. The two of them open a theatre together. It is called Shadow Magic. Liu’s father is against it. He takes what they are doing to be against tradition. Meanwhile Liu is in love. Her name is Ling. Ling is the daughter of Lord Tan, a star of the Beijing opera. Liu sees the cinema as his way up. Then the two of them are summoned before the Empress Dowager. Jared Harris and Xia Yu appear in the hundred and sixteen minute film, a Chinese, German, Taiwanese and American production Ann Hu finished in 2000.
