She Taught Me Serendipity

Akiko Ohku's 2025 Japanese film opens with a university student who speaks to no one. He meets a woman in his class and comes close to someone for the first time; the relationship moves quickly. The second half changes register. Something unexpected emerges and the narrative leaves romantic comedy behind; the film does not build this as a twist and signals the coming loss early. Ohku is known for using voiceover and imagined scenes, and here too the narrative proceeds from inside the young man's head. Yuumi Kawai is in the cast. The tone begins light and grows steadily heavier. Who it's for: those who like Japanese romantic drama. Who it's not for: viewers uncomfortable with terminal illness used as an emotional device.
