What Shepherds and Butchers Is About
South Africa in the final years of apartheid. Leon, a nineteen year old warder from the death row wing, stands trial for shooting seven black men. The lawyer who takes his defence, played by Steve Coogan, argues the case not as murder but as the consequence of a teenager having been made to assist at execution after execution, which turns the courtroom into a trial of capital punishment itself. Oliver Schmitz directed it from Chris Marnewick's novel, which drew on a real case. The hangings are shown at length and the film does not soften them.
