What Life, Above All Is About

Oliver Schmitz adapted this from Allan Stratton's 2004 novel Chanda's Secrets. Chanda, twelve years old and living in a town outside Johannesburg, has to take charge of a funeral after her baby sister dies, and then deal alone with the silence surrounding the illness in her house. The subject is not really the illness but the fact that nobody will name it; neighbourliness, gossip and shame all end up loaded onto a child. Schmitz tells it at her eye level and never lets it slide into lament. Khomotso Manyaka carries the lead in her first film. It played in Un Certain Regard at Cannes and was South Africa's Academy Award submission.
