What Shoot Me in the Heart Is About
After his mother’s suicide, a young man is diagnosed with schizophrenia and admitted to a psychiatric hospital. There he meets another patient, shut in like him but recognising no limits at all, and the two work out a plan to get out. The film does not use illness as a puzzle or a source of horror; it looks at the daily texture of life inside a closed institution, at the hierarchy among the patients and at how the link to the outside wears away. The escape is not an action set piece either, but two people trying to get some say over their own lives. Mun Je-yong directed, adapting Jeong Yu-jeong’s novel, which won the Segye Literature Award in 2009. Lee Min-ki and Yeo Jin-goo take the leads.
