What Shutter Is About
A married man back in Kozhikode from the Gulf ends up shut inside his own empty shop with a sex worker named Thankam, the shutter pulled down from outside by a friend who then cannot come back to open it, leaving the two of them stuck there for a night and a day. The film does not use that as thriller material; what the closed shutter actually exposes is a society applying two different measures to the man and the woman in the same situation. The panic, the gossip and the fear for reputation outside are far louder than anything happening inside. It is the first film by Joy Mathew, a theatre actor and playwright, with Lal and Sreenivasan in the leads, and it took the audience prize at the 17th International Film Festival of Kerala.
