What Siberian Lady Macbeth Is About
In provincial Russia in the nineteenth century, Katerina, the young wife of a rich merchant, begins an affair with Sergei, who works about the house. When her father in law finds out, she poisons him; that first killing brings others, and the lie the two of them build together keeps growing. In the end an account is demanded and they arrive somewhere nobody wins. Adapted from Nikolai Leskov’s novella Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, the film is about the coldness around passion rather than about the passion. Olivera Markovic and Ljuba Tadic appear in Andrzej Wajda’s ninety three minute Polish and Yugoslav production, completed in 1962.
