Silence Like Glass

The film starts from a true story. At its centre are two young women. The two of them are nothing alike. One is a ballerina of nineteen. She collapses on stage. The tests that follow reveal that she has cancer. She is admitted to a specialist clinic. She shares a room with another patient. The other woman comes from a working class family. At first the two cannot get along at all. Class and temperament both stand between them. But they are living with the same illness in the same room. In time the distance between them changes. The film describes the illness without dressing it up. Jami Gertz and Martha Plimpton appear in the hundred and two minute film, an American and German co-production Carl Schenkel finished in 1989.
