What Out of Order Is About

Friday evening. In an office tower, the lift engineer leaves the job half done and goes home; he will finish on Monday. He does not know there are four people still in the building. The four get into the lift and it stops between floors. There is no phone, nobody is coming, and the weekend is two and a half days long. At first they joke. Then a bag comes out: what is in it explains why one of the four is there at all. As the air thins, the politeness between them goes with it. Carl Schenkel directs this German film of ninety minutes, with Götz George and Renée Soutendijk in the cast. Almost all of it takes place inside one lift car. One of the most remembered German thrillers of the eighties.
