In 1982 three engineers sat down in a Houston diner, sketched out a portable computer and founded Compaq. Their target was the most powerful technology company in the world. Neither summary explains the crucial point: those who copied IBM's code were crushed in court, while Compaq had engineers who had never seen the code write it again from nothing, which is how it built a compatible machine and stayed out of the lawsuits. The compatible computer world we live in came out of that method.
