What Sinbad Is About

Zoltán Huszárik's first feature comes out of the Szindbád stories Gyula Krúdy wrote in the early years of the last century. A man who spent his life moving from woman to woman and table to table looks back as it nears its end, though the film is not telling a life story so much as assembling that life's smells, tastes and textures. Time does not run straight here. A dish being eaten, a train window, the back of a woman's neck all arrive on the same plane. Zoltán Latinovits plays Szindbád as a man who loses what he remembers in the act of remembering it. It is held to be one of the most original Hungarian films ever made, and Huszárik left only two features behind him.
