Yamil cannot remember a time without the war. He knows his father only from photographs and letters and waits for the war to end so the man will come home. One day his mother returns from a distant city with a girl who does not speak: Oksana. The instruction from his father is plain, they will care for her as if she were his own sister. Adapted from a story by Mustay Karim, one of the best known names in Bashkir literature, it stays behind the front: hunger, waiting, and two children getting used to each other.
