What Small World Is About

Conrad grew up inside a wealthy family without ever belonging to it, raised almost as a brother to Thomas, the son of the house. After he accidentally burns down the holiday home he was minding, he returns to the town of his childhood, where the family has gathered for a wedding. His lapses and strange behaviour soon acquire a name, and the family installs him in a guest house on the grounds with a nurse. As the recent past dissolves the distant past sharpens, and what Conrad remembers does not line up with the family's official version of itself. Bruno Chiche adapted Martin Suter's novel Small World, with Gérard Depardieu and Niels Arestrup on either side of the story. Illness here is not the subject; it is what pries the lid off.
