What Smiles of a Summer Night Is About
On a summer night the couples gathered at a country house work out that they are paired wrongly, and everyone changes places before morning. This is the opposite of the weight the name Bergman usually implies: witty, fast, and surprisingly indecent. The question underneath is still his usual one, whether these people actually want each other, except that here he answers it with laughter. The dialogue is written and played like theatre. For anyone who has kept away from Bergman as too forbidding, it is among the best places to start, being the same mind in a much lighter register.
