What Shame Is About
A musician couple living on an island believe the war will not reach them, and when it does the character of each changes fast. Ingmar Bergman never explains the war and never says who is fighting whom, deliberately: the subject is not politics but what people become under pressure. The man who seemed cowardly hardens, the woman who seemed strong dissolves, and the film does not celebrate this as transformation. The image is bare and there is almost no music. The passage in the boat at the end is despair at its quietest.
