Snowy Road

In 1944, in Korea under Japanese occupation, two young girls, Jong-bun and Young-ae, are abducted and put on the same train. They do not know where they are being taken. Where they arrive are the military brothels the Japanese army set up, and there begins the story of the women recorded in history under the euphemism comfort women, who were in fact held by force and subjected to sexual slavery. Lee Na-jeong chooses to tell what happened without turning it into exploitation; the camera watches not the events themselves but the two girls holding on to each other, and the weight the survivor carries decades later. The narrative moves between 1944 and the present through the elderly Jong-bun’s relationship with a young girl. Kim Hyang-gi and Kim Sae-ron lead. It was first broadcast as a two-part television film on KBS in 2015 and released in cinemas in 2017.
