What Soapdish Is About
The star of a long running soap opera fights off the people trying to write her out, and the backstage becomes a soap opera itself. That doubling is the joke: producers and actors behave more extravagantly than the characters they play. The bigger Sally Field plays it, the better the film works. What separates it from the usual industry satire is that it humiliates nobody; these people are ridiculous and the film likes them. A good example of the star ensemble comedy of the nineties.
