What Sole Is About
Lena is seven months pregnant and has made an arrangement to give up the baby. Ermanno's uncle Fabio and his wife Bianca cannot have children; they are the ones paying. Ermanno's job is to act as the father, so that the child will look like an adoption between relatives and the law will have been got around. The two of them have to live in the same flat until the birth. Lena is Polish and Ermanno Italian; both are alone and both are used to thinking only about themselves. Through the weeks in the same flat they argue constantly. Carlo Sironi's first film does not turn this into a love story; what it really shows is two people slowly becoming the part they are playing. Sandra Drzymalska and Claudio Segaluscio play them. The telling is quiet, the camera keeps its distance, and the film judges nobody at any point.
