Sólo con tu pareja

Alfonso Cuarón's first feature, a comedy. Tomás writes advertising copy in Mexico City. His relationships with women run in parallel and he tells each of them a different story. Silvia, a nurse who lives in his building, is one of them. One day she realises she has been deceived and takes her revenge through her profession: she alters his test result and he believes he is HIV positive. What follows proceeds in a classical comic structure, but the background is serious. It was made at the end of the 1980s, when the epidemic was only beginning to be discussed in Mexico, and its treating the subject directly drew attention. Cuarón wrote the script with his brother Carlos. Emmanuel Lubezki is the cinematographer, in the pair's first feature together; they made many films together in the years that followed. It was a state-supported production and its release was delayed for a time; when it opened it was a commercial success in Mexico. The film opened the way to Cuarón working abroad. An interesting debut for anyone curious about Cuarón's cinema and for admirers of late-1980s Latin American comedy. For a viewer expecting the weight of his later work, this is a bedroom comedy and its register is light.
