What Solomon & Gaenor Is About
Paul Morrison’s 1999 film is set in the Welsh coal valleys in 1911. Solomon, the son of an Orthodox Jewish family, makes his living selling cloth door to door and hides who he is in order to do it. At one of the houses he meets Gaenor, whose father is hard and whose brother is openly antisemitic. The two attach themselves to each other, she becomes pregnant, and only then learns the truth about him. When anti-Jewish riots break out they have to run, and they lose each other. Morrison shot the film twice, once with the principal dialogue in English and once in Welsh, with three languages running through it. The Welsh version was nominated for the foreign-language Oscar.
