What Something New Is About
Kenya McQueen has the career, the family and the friends; the only part that will not cooperate is her love life, partly because she settled in advance on what an acceptable man looks like. Meeting Brian, a landscape architect, dismantles that list item by item, and does it precisely when the man everyone would approve of finally turns up. Sanaa Hamri uses the shape of a romantic comedy but keeps talking about class, family expectation and race while she does it. Who it’s for: viewers who want a romance that argues with itself.
