The Drama

The Drama (2026) is Kristoffer Borgli's first film with a cast this size, and if you know his habits you know what to expect: an uncomfortable idea treated seriously. Emma works at a publishing house, Charlie is a British museum director. They are happy and about to marry. During the week of the wedding something unexpected surfaces and the relationship goes somewhere unbearable. Borgli made Sick of Myself and Dream Scenario before this. Both have the same structure: an ordinary person's worst impulse becomes real and the film is caught between laughing at them and pitying them. It works the same way here. What it achieves is holding its tone. Comedy and panic occupy the same scene without cancelling each other out. What carries that balance is the two performances, both of which will be counted among the best work either has done. The real question is trust and forgiveness: can a single thing you learn about a person invalidate everything you knew before it. It was made on a relatively small budget and far exceeded expectations commercially. Alana Haim and Mamoudou Athie are in the cast. It runs 106 minutes. Good for: dark comedy, relationship drama, and the A24 register. Less good for: the discomfort is deliberate and some scenes are hard to watch. Anyone wanting a clean romantic comedy will not find one.
