Robert Pattinson plays Connie, who cannot manage a bank robbery, in Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie's Good Time of 2017. The BFI review signed by Michael Leader writes that he throws himself wholly into the Safdies' street realism and gives the part a strung-out, desperate, directionless energy. A piece in the same magazine signed by Jonathan Romney, which saw Robert Eggers's The Lighthouse of 2019 at Cannes, calls his acting there the most strained, the most intense and the most physical work he had given up to that point. In Matt Reeves's The Batman, Kim Newman says he is unusually expressive from under the mask and leaves his Bruce Wayne grieving and empty. In Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17 he plays the hero's finely separated copies in the film's second half with an effective skill. His acting in Good Time and The Lighthouse brought him male lead nominations at the Independent Spirit ceremonies of 2018 and 2020.
