Mickey 17

Bong Joon Ho’s adaptation departs from its source deliberately. Edward Ashton met Bong over Skype in 2020 and his novel appeared only in 2022, so the director wrote the screenplay in 2021 from an early draft. Asked why he raised the number from the book’s Mickey7, Bong said it was so he could kill him ten more times. Ashton says the large battle outside the ship is not in the book. Filming ran at the Warner Bros. studios in Leavesden, England, from August to December 2022. Robert Pattinson plays the two copies with two voices; at the Berlin press conference he traced Mickey 17 to Steve Buscemi in Fargo and the reference Bong gave him for Mickey 18 to Peter Stormare in the same film. For long stretches the actor opposite Pattinson is Pattinson. The release slid from March 2024 to March 2025 after the 2023 strikes; the film took 133.5 million dollars worldwide, South Korea its largest foreign market. Satire and feeling share scenes: the pair running the colony are open caricature while Mickey stays small. A good fit if the passages where the two voices collide in one frame are what you came for. Not for you if you have read the novel and expect the same ending; that battle outside the ship is not in it.
