What Sonja and the Bull Is About
Sonja, a city woman from Zagreb, is a vegetarian and a committed animal rights activist, and when she speaks out on television against the tradition of bull wrestling in the Dalmatian hinterland she angers a number of families in the villages. It is decided that however passionately she loves animals she would never dare stand in front of a bull, bets are placed, and the man put in her way is Ante, known everywhere for his powers of persuasion. Vlatka Vorkapić’s hundred and two minute Croatian comedy, her first feature, builds the tension between city and country without making a fool of either side. She wrote it with Elvis Bošnjak, and it won the Golden Arena for best screenplay at the Pula Film Festival.
