To All the Boys I've Loved Before

Everything here starts from one contrivance: five letters never meant to be sent get mailed. Susan Johnson resolves that knot in roughly ten minutes and never returns to it; the rest is the routine of a fake dating pact. The letters are an ignition mechanism, not a mystery. The more interesting choice puts the household, not the couple, at the centre. An older sister leaving home and a younger one interfering take more screen time than the romance. For someone watching a family rebuild itself after a mother’s death those scenes are the body of the film; for someone wanting a pure two hander they feel like detours. The conflict is internal too: the rival barely threatens anything and the real obstacle is Lara Jean’s avoidance. Author Jenny Han said nearly every producer she met wanted a lead who was not Asian American, and when one said age and race did not matter if the actress captured the character’s spirit, she answered that the spirit was Asian American. She went with the only company that agreed. Shooting took place in Vancouver, and the setting moved from the novel’s Virginia to Portland. Good if you take the sister scenes as seriously as the romance. Not for a viewer who needs a real obstacle and high stakes.
