What Sonny Boy Is About

Waldemar Nods is a young man who has come from Suriname to study in the Netherlands. Rika van der Lans, who runs the boarding house where he stays, is seventeen years older than him, married and already the mother of four. They fall in love, and in the Netherlands of the 1930s the relationship is unacceptable on every count: his colour, the age gap, her situation. When Rika becomes pregnant it all gets considerably harder. Maria Peters adapted the film from Annejet van der Zijl's work of non-fiction. The story is true, and the war pulls both of them into it. Sergio Hasselbaink plays Waldemar and Ricky Koole plays Rika. Their son's nickname gives the film its title.
