What Mike Says Goodbye! Is About

Ten-year-old Mike has come through leukaemia and is ready to leave hospital after months, and his mother does not come to collect him. The nurse calls child services, so that when the mother finally does arrive he cannot go with her and has to be placed with a foster family. Not wanting that, he sets about behaving badly in front of every prospective couple. Maria Peters’s Dutch film carries the mother’s drinking and the boy’s loyalty at the same time without simplifying either. Maas Bronkhuyzen’s Mike keeps the sadness underneath the film’s cheerfulness visible the whole way through.
