Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety

Titu and Sonu have been friends since childhood. Titu is getting married; Sweety is the girl the family found and everyone approves of. Sonu suspects her. He thinks she is too perfect, that she will steer his friend, and that after the wedding she will come between them. Sweety notices him too. From then a quiet struggle begins between the two and Titu is in the middle; each tries to convince him and he sees neither. Luv Ranjan directs. Kartik Aaryan plays Sonu, Nushrratt Bharuccha plays Sweety and Sunny Singh plays Titu. The film was a large commercial success in India and what it took against its low budget drew attention. What was argued about most is the point of view; the narrative stands largely with the male character and keeps the woman in the position of suspect. That choice raised an argument about misogyny in the reviews, and the director's earlier films were assessed in the same frame. The narrative places friendship above the relationship and defends that openly. The grandfather played by Alok Nath carries the comic side and is written against what the genre expects. The music was widely listened to and the songs had a share in the film's success. Who it is for: viewers who like mainstream Indian comedy. Who it is not for: the narrative is partisan, the woman's part underwritten, and the humour often coarse.
