Sorry to Bother You

Boots Riley finished a first draft in 2012 and could not get it financed. His band The Coup put out a concept album of the same name, and the full script appeared in issue 48 of McSweeney’s in 2014. The white voice at the centre is not an effect but a second cast. David Cross speaks for Cassius, Lily James for Detroit, Patton Oswalt for the lead power caller. The voice over Danny Glover is not an actor but the film’s sound engineer, Ryan Coursey; Riley said so to correct a rumour that Steve Buscemi had done it. Riley shot in Oakland between 22 June and 30 July 2017. After Sundance, with Annapurna aboard, he added 200,000 dollars of footage setting up the ending, which the festival print lacked. It opened on 16 screens with one of the best per screen averages of the year, and its first day in wide release beat its whole limited week. An international distributor still took months to find. It won best first feature at the 34th Independent Spirit Awards. A good fit if you want the white voice spread across 4 performances instead of one running joke, its meaning shifting as it goes. Not for anyone who needs the rules a film sets in its first hour to hold in its last.
