What Soul Power Is About
In Kinshasa in October 1974, alongside the heavyweight fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, a three night music festival was staged under the name Zaire 74, with American and African musicians sharing the same stage. The documentary was built from footage of those days and shows the backstage, the failures of the organisation and the mood of the city as much as the performances. James Brown, Bill Withers, B. B. King and Manu Dibango are on stage, and Muhammad Ali and Don King appear in the footage. Jeffrey Kusama-Hinte’s ninety three minute production comes from the same archive whose fight material had years earlier been cut into When We Were Kings.
