What Southern Comfort Is About
A National Guard unit on exercise in the Louisiana bayou takes local boats without permission and gets an answer. Their weapons are loaded with blanks and they do not know the country. The film builds the conflict as a story of getting lost rather than a hunt; the narrative almost never shows the enemy and the tension comes from not seeing them. The country itself becomes the main threat. Walter Hill directed, with music by Ry Cooder. The film has often been read as an indirect account of another war, which the director did not confirm. A real warning: there is animal death, torture and sudden violence. The portrayal of the local people is also contested.
