What Space Battleship Yamato Is About
An alien force called the Gamilons launches a nuclear attack on Earth and the planet becomes unlivable. The survivors rebuild a sunken Japanese battleship, the Yamato, so that it can travel through space. The crew sets out on a long journey to fetch a device that will clear the radiation from the atmosphere, and the time they have is limited. The film was put together from a television series and came to be counted among the most influential works of Japanese science fiction animation. The account is built as a journey story and the shrinking time carries all of the tension. Toshio Masuda’s hundred and thirty five minute Japanese film was completed in 1977.
