Lepel is a boy of nine. His parents went away years ago on a world tour by hot air balloon. Lepel was left with his grandmother. Her name is Koppenol. She keeps a button shop. She works the boy without stopping. All the housework falls to him. She uses him in the stores too, while she cuts buttons off the clothes. A kind salesman called Max gives the boy a balloon. His grandmother takes that from him as well, and Lepel runs away. On the road he meets Max’s daughter Pleun. The schoolmaster Bijts is looking for him too, but only for his talent at arithmetic, and Max finds out the truth about the boy’s family by accident. Joep Truijen appears in the ninety six minute film, a German, Dutch and British production Willem van de Sande Bakhuyzen finished in 2005.
