Spring

The second film by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and a mixture of genres: half road film, half creature horror. Evan loses his mother, has to run from the police after a fight, and gets on the first flight he can buy a ticket for, to Italy. In a small coastal town he meets a woman named Louise. She works in biology and behaves strangely: some nights she disappears, she injects herself, and she times their intimacy. The idea is to state the hardest part of a relationship through a supernatural mechanism. Once what Louise is has been explained, the matter stops being horror and becomes a choice: whether to stay with a person even after knowing what they are. The effects are largely practical; the budget is small and rather than hide it the film works in the dark. Lou Taylor Pucci plays Evan and Nadia Hilker plays Louise. A good discovery for anyone who likes independent horror and genre mixtures. For a viewer expecting classical horror, this is actually a love story and the creature is in second place.
