Springfield Rifle

The Civil War is on. Horses being shipped for the Union out of Colorado are raided again and again, and the raiders know the routes in advance. Somebody inside is passing information. Major Lex Kearney volunteers to find out who, but the method is brutal: he is dishonourably discharged for cowardice in battle, publicly and falsely. Nobody knows the truth, not even his wife. Kearney falls in with the raiders and slowly earns their trust. André de Toth directs, with Gary Cooper as Kearney, alongside Phyllis Thaxter and Lon Chaney Jr. It is an espionage story wearing a western's clothes, and its real subject is a man agreeing to lose his own name.
