What Crime Wave Is About
Crime Wave is a film noir directed by André de Toth, notable for cinematographer Bert Glennon's night photography, shot on real locations around Glendale and Los Angeles: an actual Bank of America branch, the Glendale Grand Central Air Terminal, the Bunker Hill neighborhood, and the real LAPD homicide squad room and radio room. The final chase sequence follows the actual route from the bank in Glendale to Los Angeles's Chinatown, along Brand Boulevard and the Hyperion Viaduct. Long overlooked, the film was later rediscovered through Warner Archive's 4K scan from the original negative. Who it's for: anyone drawn to low budget classic film noir shot on real Los Angeles streets that has since been critically reappraised. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a glossy, studio bound crime film, since this one's power comes precisely from its raw, documentary like realism.
