Pépé le Moko, one of France’s most wanted criminals, is hidden in the Casbah of Algiers. The maze of streets protects him, but the police are waiting the moment he steps outside, which makes the place that keeps him safe also his prison. That balance breaks when he falls for Gaby, a Parisian woman lost in the Casbah, because she reminds him of the life he lost. Inspector Slimane waits patiently for exactly that weakness. Julien Duvivier’s film is one of the founding texts of French noir, and Jean Gabin’s melancholy gangster starts here. Hollywood remade it almost immediately.
