Maria Chapdelaine

Maria lives on a farm in Quebec. Her father works in the woods at logging. The settlement is remote and the winters are hard. Three men court Maria. One is Francois Paradis. He is a trapper who works in the forest. One is Lorenzo. He has come from the city and he is well off. One is Eutrope. Eutrope is a lumberjack, a man who would carry on the life she has. Maria is caught between the three. The winter changes what each of them planned. The account comes from the novel by Louis Hemon. The filming was done in the places the novel describes. Madeleine Renaud and Jean Gabin take the leads, with Jean-Pierre Aumont also in the cast, in Julien Duvivier’s French film of 1934.
