What Flesh and Fantasy Is About
Three supernatural tales come one after another: a story of a mask set on Mardi Gras night in New Orleans, a fortune teller who predicts a murder, and a man who really does find the woman from his dream. Julien Duvivier directed and Charles Boyer both acted in it and co-produced. Edward G. Robinson, Barbara Stanwyck, Betty Field, Robert Cummings and Thomas Mitchell fill out the cast. A fourth story was in fact shot; it was meant to open the film and to lead into the mask episode by way of a drowned body. Preview audiences took to it, but Universal pulled it out anyway, then had extra scenes written and released it separately in 1944 under the title Destiny.
