What Stakeout Is About

After a pawnbroker is murdered, two Tokyo detectives are sent down to Kyushu to watch the house of the suspect’s former lover, on the thin chance that he will come to her. As the waiting stretches out, the younger detective Yuki begins to feel for the woman he is watching: Sadako is trapped in an unhappy marriage to a domineering bank official. Yoshitarō Nomura uses the procedural as a way of looking at how narrow a woman’s life had been made in postwar Japan. Shinobu Hashimoto, who wrote Rashomon and Seven Samurai, adapted it from a story by Seicho Matsumoto. Hideko Takamine plays Sadako, and the tension comes from watching rather than from event.
