What Zero Focus Is About

A week into her marriage, Teiko’s husband leaves on a short business trip and does not come back, and she realises she knows almost nothing about the man she has been living with for seven days. She sets out with two old photographs as her only lead, and the further into his past she goes, the more of what postwar Japan preferred to bury comes up with it. Shinobu Hashimoto and Yoji Yamada adapted the novel by Seicho Matsumoto, folding the story back on itself in flashbacks rather than telling it straight. It is the second of eight films Yoshitaro Nomura made from Matsumoto, and its suspense is about what is being hidden rather than who did it.
