Stand and Deliver

A mathematics teacher who takes a job at a Los Angeles state school opens a class for an advanced examination nobody thinks his students can pass. Even the school's own administration is against it. The students who pass are accused of cheating and the examining board calls them back to sit it again. The film ties its real subject to that: the achievement of a group of Latino students being treated as suspicious by default. Ramon Menendez directed, with Edward James Olmos in the lead. It follows the real work of Jaime Escalante. Before watching: the film compresses the process into a single year and shortens the years of preparation Escalante actually needed, a simplification later criticised. The examination episode it describes did happen.
