Steve McQueen: The Lost Movie

The documentary is about a film that was never made. It was to be called Day of the Champion. Its subject was Formula One. Steve McQueen was to star. John Sturges was to direct. Preparation began in the middle of the sixties. Shooting was set for 1966. The crew filmed the German Grand Prix of 1965 at the Nurburgring. Then the project stopped. The reason was a race with another film. John Frankenheimer’s Grand Prix was finished first and Warner Bros. pulled out. The footage that had been shot was taken for lost for many years, until it turned up by chance. David Letterman narrates the eighty seven minute documentary, a British production Alex Rodger finished in 2021.
