Django & Django: Sergio Corbucci Unchained

Sergio Corbucci stood in Sergio Leone's shadow but made the harshest films of the Italian western. Django, The Great Silence and The Mercenary are his. His films do not exalt the hero; they cripple him, silence him, make him lose. In this documentary the person telling us about Corbucci is Quentin Tarantino. Luca Rea combines Tarantino's reading with footage from Corbucci's films. Tarantino's central claim is that Corbucci's westerns are the direct equivalent of Italy's experience of fascism and post-war violence, and are therefore bleaker than the rest. People who worked with Corbucci, such as Franco Nero and Ruggero Deodato, also speak. Archive footage of the period is used throughout. Who it's for: Viewers who like Italian westerns, the history of genre cinema, and Tarantino's readings of films. Who it's not for: The narrative rests largely on one person's interpretation with no counter-argument. Context is also missing for anyone who does not know Corbucci's films.
