What Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans Is About
After Bullitt and The Thomas Crown Affair, Steve McQueen wanted to make his own film, about racing. Le Mans was that attempt, and he put close to everything he had into it. There was no finished script during the shoot, the director walked, the backers pulled out, his marriage fell apart. The film failed at the box office. John McKenna and Gabriel Clarke's documentary became possible when more than a million feet of footage everyone believed had been destroyed turned up. The rediscovered material, McQueen's own recordings and the accounts of people who were there run alongside each other. It screened at Cannes in 2015.
