Sly

The documentary follows Sylvester Stallone through his own account: childhood in Hell's Kitchen, the partial facial paralysis caused by a complication at birth, years of not getting work, and writing Rocky and then holding out against the studio to play the part himself. Thom Zimny films while Stallone is emptying his house, which gives the whole thing the air of settling accounts. His relationship with his father sits at the centre and he speaks about it this openly for the first time. Quentin Tarantino, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Talia Shire also appear. The failures are not hidden and the critical distance is thin. Netflix released it in 2023. Who it is for: viewers interested in star portraits and the history of eighties Hollywood. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a detached assessment, since the narrator and the subject are the same man.
